From Our Principal ...
Dear Families
I spoke with our kids on Assembly today about the things we need to do to change. Former Broncos coach Wayne Bennett was fond of saying "if you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always got".
To continue to grow and improve requires conscious dedication to the process. One thing I have found both personally and professionally is that those who set goals and write them down are always far more likely to succeed.
At the beginning of the year it is a great exercise to sit as a family and consciously focus on some goals. These can be personal, professional or academic and for our kids to see us go through the same process is very powerful. As a family, we used to hang them on the fridge. It is amazing what you can achieve with simple prominent reminders.
Have a great week and hug your kids.
Regards
Jamie Emerick

Opening Mass - All Welcome!

A Big Thank You To Our Parents
Behaviour Management at St John’s is very open and transparent. We expect our students to be safe, respectful and to learn at all times; no ifs, buts or maybes.
We do expect our students to be safe in the choices they make toward others and for themselves, and we expect them to keep their hands and feet to themselves, no matter their age or situation.
And yes, we do expect our students to make respectful choices; in their words and actions and deeds; to choose kind over nasty, to build others up, not tear them down.
And yes, we do expect our students to come to school to learn and to allow others to learn; to listen, to positively engage, and to work hard.
As the years have progressed, behaviour expectations are tested time and time again. And this is absolutely ok, because part of life is about testing “the line in the sand”. By having behavioural expectations at St John’s that are clear, firm and consistent, we can educate our (your) children from very early on that respect, safety and learning are what our school is all about.
We thank you, St John’s families, for knowing and supporting our clear standards and for supporting our school in enabling all students to achieve these very clear standards. We thank you in supporting us to help develop your child into the best person they can be.
Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) Code of Practice
Thank you to parents who have already accepted through Parent Lounge.
Due to Diocesan requirements, failure to accept the ICT Code of Practice Agreement on Parent Lounge by Friday 16 February 2024, will result in loss of access of ICT for your child at St John’s.
Each year, age-appropriate ICT Codes of Practice are distributed to all students in Years 3-6. Teachers will provide students with relevant and appropriate information and training about the ICT Codes of Practice during class this week.
In an effort to be sustainable and conserve resources, the ICT Code of Practice was be placed on Parent Lounge last week, so families can discuss the ICT Code of Practice with their children and then indicate their acceptance electronically by ticking the acceptance box on Parent Lounge by Friday 16 February.
Additionally:
- The Student Letter of Agreement (last page of the Year 3-6 document) will be printed at school and signed by each student in Year 3-6 prior to Friday 16 February.
The signed Agreement is kept for the duration of the school year.
Mobile Phones & Wearable Technology During School Hours
As of January 2024, the Queensland government introduced new guidelines in relation to mobile phone and wearable technology in schools.
Below is the section from our Parent Handbook that provides guidance for parents on how St John’s manages these new requirements.
At St John’s, we recognise that there are legitimate reasons for students to bring a mobile phone or personal device to school. These may include but not limited to:
- To ensure their safety while travelling
- So that parents can contact them outside of school hours.
At school, no student is permitted to use or access their mobile phones and personal devices during school hours. These devices include any watch or other device that has the potential for internet connectivity or recording images or sounds.
During the school day, students are not permitted to access, or use their mobile phones or other personal devices. Students must drop their device off to the office for storage at the beginning of the school day. They will not be able to access their device until the end of the school day.
If you need to contact your child during the school day, or your child needs to contact you, this can be done via the school landline – 4978 1799.
Volunteer Inductions
Volunteer Inductions will take place in the school libary this week. If you wish to volunteer in any capacity in the school, it is essential that you attend one of these inductions. You do not need to pre-register. Just arrive at the school library by 4.35pm on one of the afternoons listed below.

Chess Club....

St John the Baptist Chess Club practice has changed to every Wednesday first break with Father Peter and Mrs Milic in the Music room. Chess club is open for students year 2 to year 6. Come for training games or just to have game for fun. Please email Mrs Milic, Irene_Milic@rok.catholic.edu.au for further information.
Welcome to our St John's Library!

LEGO DAY January 28th
1932
Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from Billund, Denmark, founded the Lego company to manufacture wooden toys. The name “LEGO” is taken from the first two letters of the Danish words LEG GODT, meaning “play well “.
1949
Lego bricks were created.
The company began manufacturing the now iconic bricks using an injection mould machine it had recently purchase. The moulds used to produce LEGO bricks are now accurate to within two-thousandth of a millimetre (0.002 mm!). Because of this high degree of accuracy, there are only around 18 bricks in every million produced that fail to meet the company’s high-quality standard.
2024
LEGO Minifigures are the world’s largest population, with over 4 billion of them around the world! Laid end to end, the number of LEGO bricks sold in a year would reach more than five times round the world.
Come and visit our LEGO display and enjoy the read!!
