From Our Principal
Dear Families,
As mentioned in previous newsletters, all schools operated by Catholic Education – Diocese of Rockhampton (CEDR) will be providing a range of materials to inform families of the new Federal Government Funding model (Gonski model) and the impact on funding for Catholic Schools.
Over the coming months, further advice pieces will be shared, with each piece building on the detail of the previous.
Please take the time to read the material to understand the impact of the changes on the funding for our school and school fees across all non-government schools.
Have a great week and hug your kids.
Regards,
Jamie Emerick
Principal.

School Improvement Team Visit
During Week 8, St John’s will participate in a School Review – which is a five-yearly review of the school’s progress against its Strategic Plan and the School Improvement Tool (SIT). This is where three external reviewers visit the school to talk to staff and students about the school’s progress. As part of the review the team will consider evidence associated with our school improvement journey. They will then provide a report that details commendations and recommendations for the next school improvement plan.
Our strategic plan continues to focus on two major priorities:
- Improve reading, writing and numeracy
- Ensure all students have pathways to success
Members of the review team will be talking with staff, students, parents and community partners over two days – Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 June.

St John the Baptist Feast Day
We are very fortunate to have St John the Baptist as our school’s namesake, as he is someone we can all truly look up to as a role model. John was not swayed by public opinion. Nor did he care about what the general populace was doing. Rather, he was a man who followed his own convictions, and even though this went against what the current trend was, he was courageous enough to stand up and say his piece. He wasn’t afraid to be seen as being different, such was his commitment to what he believed.
His intention was only to spread the word that people needed to change their wrongful ways in readiness for the coming of the Messiah. His conviction did win him many followers and this inevitably ended with his death at the hands of Herod.
We can all take a lesson from his courage and his commitment to what he believed was necessary and right. As members of the St John the Baptist community, may we too strive to mirror these traits and be the hands, the feet and the voice of Jesus in today’s world…in our school, workplace and home.
All families are Welcome to join us for our St John the Baptist Feast Day Mass on Friday 21 June at 11:40am in Nazareen Place (Multi-purpose Shed).

Statement of Special Religious Character

Library News

National Sorry Day is observed on May 26th each year in Australia. It is a day of remembrance and reflection dedicated to acknowledging the historical mistreatment and injustices suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, particularly the Stolen Generations.

A young Aboriginal girl is taken from the north of Australia and sent to an institution in the distant south. There, she slowly makes a new life for herself and, in the face of tragedy, finds strength in new friendships. Poignantly told from the child’s perspective, Sister Heart affirms the power of family and kinship.

Times Tables Rock Stars
Congratulations to all students in Years 4, 5 and 6 for their participation in the Times Tables Rocks competition. St John's came FIRST!

Instrumental Music
Whilst Mrs Elvery has been on maternity leave, we have been searching for a replacement tutor to conduct instrumental music lessons at St John's and St Francis. There have been a couple of Expressions of Interest, but to this date no candidates have followed through with an application. We are continuing to advertise for a suitable applicant. If you know anyone in your own circles, we would be interested to hear from them.

Flute Lessons at St John's

If your child is interested in learning to play the flute at St John’s school, please ask your child to go to the music room on Friday to pick up a form.
This form is to give me permission to test your child on getting a sound out on the flute headpiece.
Please be aware that there are no hire flutes available. If your child is successful after testing, you would need to purchase your own flute.
Regards
Mrs Perrett
