From Our Principal...
Dear Families,
Amy Morin is an American psychotherapist and university lecturer. Morin also provides support for many by being, what she calls a mental strength trainer. She says that you need mental strength to be successful. This is because mental strength conquers self-doubt, keeps you motivated, and helps you face your fears.
This week, the 43rd full series of the State of Origin rugby league series goes down to a deciding match for the 22nd time.
There is a quote from Phil Gould who is the most successful coach for the New South Wales team. He would regularly tell anyone who wanted to listen that Origin doesn’t begin until the last ten minutes of the game.
The message he is getting at, is that there are plenty of players with talent and ability, what makes winners at that level, are the players that are able to harness the power of their mind to convince a body that is physically exhausted to keep pushing and compete when it would be all too easy to give in and rest. Mental toughness and self-discipline are the hallmarks of champions regardless of the field they are in.
As you would hear me say consistently, our kids do not learn these skills when they leave school. The English scholar and bishop, Brooke Foss Westcott, was famous for saying :
Great occasions do not make heroes or cowards; they simply unveil them to the eyes of men. Silently and imperceptibly, as we wake or sleep, we grow strong or weak; and at last some crisis shows what we have become.
Origin does not make the player, it is just the stage where they can reveal the mental strength that they have honed since their early years.
My greatest weakness as a parent was that I wanted to put my fix it hat on and solve all my kids problems. It took me a long time to realise that there is a big difference in solving the problem for them and being there to support them as they work through the problems of life.
I can’t be there to fight every battle for them, but if they can hold on to the sayings and knowledge that I always tried to give them as they apply it to the problems of life, they will go a long way to solving them. It is very much the analogy of am I teaching them to fish or just giving them a fish?
How do we all stop and take the time to teach our kids to fish?
Have a great week and hug your kids.
Go Queensland!
Regards,
Jamie Emerick
Principal.

Port to Park Fun Run - Raises Funds for Our School
Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) Port to Park Fun Run can help us raise important funds for our school community and we’d love as many of our students and families to participate on Sunday 18 August.
The event will run in GPC's beautiful parklands, highlighting all three areas - East Shores, The Gladstone Marina and Spinnaker Park.
This year there will be three races for participants to choose from including the 10 kilometre Koongo Dash, the new 5 kilometre Koommonka sprint and the 3 kilometre Yallarm Family Run. The race names recognise the language of the Traditional Owners of the land - the Bailai and Gooreng Gooreng, and Gurang nations, with Koongo meaning place of water and Yallarm meaning place of shells and Koommonka meaning Possum.
Students can register to participate in Port to Park as individuals or with their family for the 3km, 5km and/or 10km events and their registration fee will be directed back to our school. Make sure you nominate our school when registering!
So get your runners ready and start limbering up so we can raise some vital funds for our school.
You can register here at Port to Park.
Port to Park is proudly supported by a number of local corporations including Gladstone Industry Leadership Group, Squadron Energy, Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre and Gladstone Regional Council, Santos GLNG and SMIT Lamnalco.
