From Our Principal ...
Dear Families,
The Olympics are done and dusted for another four years. As always, there are stories of success, failure, triumph and tragedy. The pinnacle of sport brings out the very best in athletes and competitors. Medals have no real value in themselves, they are representative of the fact I have achieved at the very highest level. It is something that has always resonated with me both as a competitor and a coach. The fact that I have overcome and succeeded is far more important than a medal or a trophy. Winning only has value if I have beaten the best.
There is a great story of the Spanish athlete Iván Fernández Anaya who was competing in a cross-country race in Spain. He was running second, some distance behind race leader Kenyan, Abel Mutai - bronze medalist in the 3,000-metre steeplechase at the London Olympics. As they entered the finishing straight, he saw the Kenyan runner, the certain winner of the race, mistakenly pull up about 10 metres before the finish, thinking he had already crossed the line.
Fernández Anaya quickly caught up with him, but instead of exploiting Mutai's mistake to speed past and claim an unlikely victory, he stayed behind and, using gestures, guided the Kenyan to the line and let him cross first.
"He was the rightful winner. He created a gap that I couldn't have closed."
"I didn't deserve to win it," says 24-year-old Fernández Anaya. "I did what I had to do. He was the rightful winner. He created a gap that I couldn't have closed if he hadn't made a mistake. As soon as I saw he was stopping, I knew I wasn't going to pass him."
That sort of sportsmanship comes at a cost. He could have easily said nothing and taken the lead and won. In fact, his coach was on record saying that is what he should have done. However, we all have a conscience that we have to live with and in the quiet moments of life would I be prepared to be reminded of that?
Fernandez himself told the press, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honour in that medal? What would my mother think of that?"
That is the character I would want for my own children and something that I believe sport can bring out in our kids and why, in the time poor space schools operate in, that I believe competitive sport still has a place.
Have a great week and hug your kids.
Regards,
Jamie Emerick
Principal.

Grandparents Day
On Friday, we had the opportunity to welcome our grandparents into our school and classrooms. Each year the school community looks forward to this event and it seems more joyous every year. We are so lucky to have a supportive school community, and this is often founded on the beliefs and practices of our parents and grandparents. Their legacy lives through each of us and is carried forward to future generations. The Australian Catholics Spring 2024 magazine features young writers from Catholic schools. The words of William Edwards from Loyola College in Watsonia, Victoria showed insight to the wisdom and knowledge available to us through older people.
His article is included for your interest.
Proverbs 12:15
“The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”

Aurizon Visits St John's

Port to Park Fun Run - Raises Funds for Our School
Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) Port to Park Fun Run can help us raise important funds for our school community and we’d love as many of our students and families to participate on Sunday 18 August.
The event will run in GPC's beautiful parklands, highlighting all three areas - East Shores, The Gladstone Marina and Spinnaker Park.
This year there will be three races for participants to choose from including the 10 kilometre Koongo Dash, the new 5 kilometre Koommonka sprint and the 3 kilometre Yallarm Family Run. The race names recognise the language of the Traditional Owners of the land - the Bailai and Gooreng Gooreng, and Gurang nations, with Koongo meaning place of water and Yallarm meaning place of shells and Koommonka meaning Possum.
Students can register to participate in Port to Park as individuals or with their family for the 3km, 5km and/or 10km events and their registration fee will be directed back to our school. Make sure you nominate our school when registering!
So get your runners ready and start limbering up so we can raise some vital funds for our school.
You can register here at Port to Park.
Port to Park is proudly supported by a number of local corporations including Gladstone Industry Leadership Group, Squadron Energy, Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre and Gladstone Regional Council, Santos GLNG and SMIT Lamnalco.
