Our St John’s App Is Live!
From Our Principal...
Dear Families
July was named in honour of Julius Caesar, the Roman soldier, politician and eventually emperor. Quintilis, which was his birth month, was renamed July by the Roman senate. Quintilis means “fifth month” in Latin, which represents where this month originally fell in the Roman calendar. The original Roman calendar had 10 months.
July also sees the beginning of the new semester. After a break, it is a chance to regroup and take stock of our direction at the middle point of the course.
Report cards will have given a point in time picture, but these can never fully discuss a student’s successes or areas of challenge. Parent/teacher interviews commence next week, please make the most of this opportunity to gather information about your child's journey. It gives you some powerful language to use, as plans for semester two are put in place.
I am a firm believer that our children are very aware and quick to pick up on what we as parents value. If Mum and Dad are involved and interested, then I need to put effort in. If Mum and Dad are not so interested, I don't need to worry too much.
As a parent, I will tell you that it is a very powerful conversation when we sit down with our kids and talk to them as active participants in their learning. As adults, we can scaffold that to the appropriate age, but unless our kids have 'buy in’, school and learning is just a process that happens to them, not one they are actively involved in.
All the best to our Netball and Rugby League teams as they compete in the Challenge Cup this week in Yeppoon.
Have a great week and hug your kids.

Catholic Education Week 25 – 31 July 2021
Week 3 is Catholic Education Week. We celebrate, across the state, belonging to the Catholic Education family of schools.
We will celebrate in this week in a number of ways.
Lunch on the Lawn – Thursday 10.45 am on July 29 2021
Bring a homemade or bought lunch to share with your children in picnic style on the oval.
Please note, that in keeping with COVID guidelines, families will not be able to join with other families, but rather sit only as a family group.
Families will also need to check in using our QR code on entry to the school. A number of entry points will have this code displayed to check in with.
We thank you, in advance, for your cooperation with these requests.
Random Acts of Kindness
We are all called to do Random Acts of Kindness during this week, and hopefully this will roll over into daily practices.
Grandparents Day
On 13 August, we will celebrate Grandparents Day as we do every year. Please invite Grandparents to come along and join in our celebrations. They will sit in on our class assembly for that day, be taken on a tour of the school by their grandchildren and finally end with morning tea provided by the school.
We look forward to celebrating this day, to thank our grandparents for the key roles they play in the lives of their families.
Thought for the Week
Throw your cares on the Lord, and he will support you. James 4:1-10. Ps 54(55):7-11, 23. Mark 9:30-37.

Our school’s favourite fun run is back for 2021 and with a new name and course!
Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) new-look Port to Park FunD Run will no doubt be a wonderful family-orientated community event and we’d love as many of our students and families to participate on Sunday 15 August.

GISMA Music Workshop
Dear Parents and Gardians,
The Gladstone Independent School Music Association is proud to announce we will be returning this year with our annual workshop.
The 23rd Annual GISMA Music Workshop will be from 26th-30th July 2021. Details regarding registrations are to follow.
What happens at the GISMA Music Workshop?
The workshops provide an opportunity for all students who play to mix with students from other schools and work with experienced tutors and conductors. The students receive intensive music tuition from local and visiting tutors, coming together to work with our visiting conductor.
Who can attend?
Students who learn woodwind, brass or percussion instruments are eligible to register. Students can be from our school’s music programs or learn privately. Unfortunately strings are not part of the GISMA bubble due to no previous programs involving strings, though it is being considered as an option to expand our net in future years.
Why are the GISMA Music Workshops important?
Music has been proven to be extremely beneficial to those who take up an instrument. Workshopping with students provides them with a unique performing experience where intensive focus on playing can:
- Accelerate the students’ progress on their instrument
- Instill confidence in the students’ playing ability and self-worth
- Motivate and affirm the reason they play music
- Long lasting positive effects are seen every year by Instrumental Music teachers, and most importantly the students have fun learning and playing music
Kind Regards,
Chelsea Elvery
GISMA Secretary
