From Our Principal
Dear Families,
‘Haste is our enemy. It puts us under stress, raises our blood pressure, makes us impatient, and, most seriously of all, blinds us to the needs of others. The more in a hurry we are, the less likely we are to stop and help someone else in need. Haste and hurry, perhaps more than anything else, prevent us from being good Samaritans. Our struggle to give proper time to family, prayer and helping others has mainly to do with time. We're invariably too busy, too pressured, too hurried, too driven, to stop and help. ‘It's no accident that virtually all of the classical spiritual writers warn about the dangers of overwork. Indeed, the dangers of haste and hurry are already written into the very first page of scripture where God invites us to make sure to keep proper Sabbath. When we are in a hurry, we see little beyond our own agenda.’
Fr Ron Rolheiser OMI Full text at: http://www.ronrolheiser.com/
This article was one that really challenged me. Our family, like most, have struggled with this. As we have moved into the empty nesters phase of life, we had expected things to slow down significantly. We seem to be just as busy and have as much to do, it is just different things that need doing.
There is a line in St Paul’s letter to the Colossians that says something like ‘let no one tell you what to eat or drink or when to hold your Sabbath. I think that Paul’s point is the same as the one that Jesus made. The Sabbath was made for the man, not Man made for the Sabbath. The important thing is to take time to stop recharge and reconnect. How often do we make the effort to connect with those important people in our lives? The amount of contact time families spend together is continuing to diminish. I am a big believer in the whole ‘emotional bank account’ concept. We need to make regular deposits in the accounts of our nearest and dearest. Our kids won’t remember the things we bought them or the money we gave them. The way we make them feel is a lasting memory.
Have a great week and hug your kids.
Regards,
Jamie Emerick
Principal.
Parking Near St John’s School
Please DO NOT Park Over Driveways
We have received several complaints from school neighbours regarding vehicles parking over their driveways. We need to be respectful of our neighbours.
Parking over driveways is ILLEGAL. Police and local traffic controllers patrol our school area often and issue fines to vehicles parked illegally.
When you park, please check that the front and back of your vehicle is NOT obstructing a driveway.
Below is an excerpt from Queensland Transport website:
Parking fines
You may receive a fine if you park or stop:
- on or across a driveway or other way of access for vehicles travelling to or from adjacent land unless:
- you are dropping off or picking up passengers and you drive on within 2 minutes after stopping
- you stop in a permitted parking bay
- on a bicycle path, footpath, shared path, dividing strip, nature strip, or painted island, unless signs tell you otherwise

Prep-Year 2 Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Code of Practice: ACCEPTANCE NOW DUE VIA PARENT LOUNGE
Each year, age-appropriate ICT Codes of Practice are communicated with our students and families.
Last week, your child’s class teacher discussed relevant and appropriate information within the Early Learning and Care – Year 2 ICT Codes of Practice.
A digital copy of the Early Learning and Care – Year 2 ICT Code of Practice has been uploaded to Parent Lounge where parents are asked to read through the document, discuss the importance of the Code of Practice with their child and tick to accept the document.
By ticking to accept, you are ‘signing’ that you have read, understood and support the Early Learning and Care – Year 2 ICT Code of Practice. This needs to be completed by Friday 14 March or your child’s access to ICT may be impacted.

School Funding in Australia
The below link explains revised school funding in Australia.
School Fees: Now OVERDUE
Term 2 2025 School Fee Accounts were emailed Wednesday 30 April. Statements are also available through our online Parent Lounge Site:
https://402sjg.rok.catholic.edu.au/parentlounge
Please note, Term 2 school fees were due on Friday 9 May.
For families paying via direct debit, this is still current, and the statement is for information purposes only, showing recent payments and charges.
Payments may be made by cash, cheque, direct debit, internet banking, EFTPOS or through Parent Lounge, either in full or in instalments (weekly, fortnightly or monthly).
The school office does not carry cash. If this is your preferred method of payment, please endeavour to have the correct amount on hand. When making payments by internet banking, it is imperative to use your “School Fee Account Number” as the reference. This will ensure payments are allocated to the correct account.
If you are experiencing difficulties in making this payment, please contact Vicki Walsh or Melissa Jackson in the office to discuss options.
School Office Hours:
Mon – Thurs: 8.00 am – 4.00 pm
Fri: 8.00am – 3.30 pm
Counsellor's Corner

Hello everyone! 🌟
My name is Miss Ru and I'm thrilled to be the School Counsellor here at St John's. I joined the team at the beginning of Term 4 last year, so some of you might already know me. For those who don't, let me introduce myself and what I do.
My role is to provide a safe, supportive and non-judgmental space for students to share their concerns, feelings and experiences. I'm dedicated to helping students develop coping strategies, build resilience and achieve their academic and personal goals. I work closely with teachers, parents and other community services to ensure we provide comprehensive support for everyone.
If your child is feeling worried, sad or upset, needs some extra support, or just wants someone to talk to, I'm here to listen and help. Counselling forms can be collected from the front office. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at ruvimbo_mhuka@rok.catholic.edu.au
Please don't hesitate to say hello if you see me around the school. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you! 😊
Best regards,
Miss Ru

If you have already had your enrolment interview and forgotten to bring in any documents i.e. original birth certificate, current immunisation schedule, pediatric reports, speech pathology assessments etc., please do so as soon as possible.
If you have not yet applied for enrolment, please do so now.

Philps' House Lunch - Lunch on the Lawn
Last Friday, our Philps House students came together for a special "Lunch on the Lawn", celebrating our house spirit and sense of community. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect, share a meal and strengthen friendships.
Philps House is named in honour of Mr. Don Philps, our school’s first P&F President, who played a significant role in shaping our school community.
Thank you to all our students and staff for making this event such a success!

Wednesday Fitness is Back!
Each Wednesday morning at 7.45am, Mrs Graham is running a 30-minute fitness session for any keen students. These sessions will help build on the fitness gains already made in HPE (from our fitness focus in Weeks 1-5) and help prepare students to do their best at the upcoming Cross Country (Thursday 3 April), the School Athletics Carnival (Term 2) as well as their own personal health benefits and goals.
Fitness will continue weekly throughout Term 1 and Term 2.
All keen and committed students are most welcome! Please meet Mrs Graham on the oval at 7.45am sharp each Wednesday morning.
