Informer - Term 4 Week 1
From Our Principal...
Dear Families
Sometimes the source of an idea, can be totally removed from our own reality. The English billionaire and entrepreneur, Richard Branson, once said inspiration can come from the most unusual places, you have to be open to see the benefits and how to apply them.
Over the holidays I read an article on the life of the American rapper DMX. As a genre of music, this style would not be something that I go out of my way to listen to, but the story of his life and death was interesting. Something that caught my attention was when he spoke about growing orchids. Not really the hobby you would associate with a rapper, but apparently one he was very keen on.
In the article he says, “When I first started growing orchids, I thought that they needed the most expensive soil and good light to blossom, but they all died. That's when I realized all they really needed was time and attention. It’s the same with humans. You don't need to give people you love a gift, you need to give them your time.
As parents, we are in the business of growing kids and after spending most of my adult life working with children, the words of DMX ring so true. One of my mantras has always been that our children want our presence, not our presents.
As we head into term four, we enter that chaotic end of year rush. There is so much to finish and get done that our kids can often be forgotten or left till the everything is finished.
So many business and life strategies talk about the concept of ‘what is urgent is not always important and what is important is not always urgent’.
The fact so many discuss it, is an indication that we are not great at discerning the difference. After nearly two years of Covid and everything else happening in our world, let's not assume that our children know that they are our priority.
Have a great week and hug your kids.
