From Our Principal
Dear Families
I have used this story before in newsletters, but the way events are unfolding around us these days, it is a story that needs to be told often.
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Our children learn much from everyone and everywhere. From birth they are little sponges, watching, listening, and learning, from the people and world around us. Parents and family members influence their kids by their words and by their example.
What example do they see in us. Patience tolerance, peace or impatience, intolerance and anger?
Have a great week and hug your kids.

Opening School Mass and Student Leadership Presentation
Today we gathered together as a school for our Opening School Mass, which seems odd considering we are creeping towards the end of March.
The Mass was presided by Father Ashwin who brought the Gospel to life for the students. He was assisted by Maggie Connor and Quinn Hillhouse for an unexpected dramatic retell. A huge thank you to our presenters, readers, altar servers, Auslan choir and teachers. There was a beautiful calm vibe throughout the mass and this was highlighted by all of the students signing ‘Lord Have Mercy’ by The Vigil Project. A few teachers and parents were a bit teary by the end and I had goosebumps listening to the voices of our wonderful children. We are truly blessed to be together as a community.
After the Mass, the Year 6 student leaders were presented with a Marist badge by Mr. Mark Elliott from the Marist Schools Association. There are three violets on the badge and they symbolise humility, simplicity and modesty. Humility is to recognise God as God. To be awestruck by the immensity and mercy of mystery. Simplicity to seek an open and trusting relationship with God. To hide nothing, to mask nothing. And also, modesty. This is not about poor self-esteem but the opposite. It means we should always seek to know ourselves. To not shout down the actions of others, crowd them with our views, or take advantage of them.
This week the teachers are welcoming parents to interviews. Our wonderful Reach Out Group have prepared little gifts to give them some sustenance to get through the week as it can be a long process with many late nights. Our members of this compassionate group live and breathe the Way of Mary, and are a blessing to our school. If you would like to join, please come along for a wee information afternoon Monday 28 March in the shed. You can enjoy a chat, cuppa and maybe a sweet treat. I look forward to seeing you there.
God bless and stay safe.

APC News...
It is hard to believe that the term is almost over..and what a term it has been!
Thank you for taking the time to meet with your child/ren’s class teachers this week to discuss their progress thus far. The teacher/parent partnership is such an important one as we travel this learning journey as a team. I am often reminded during these times of these words…
Don’t be over-preoccupied with your child’s academic ability but instead, join us as we:
Teach them to sit with those who are sitting alone.
Teach them to be kind.
Teach them to offer their help.
Teach them to encourage others.
Teach them to be a friend to the lonely.
Teach them to share.
Teach them to look for the good.
Teach them to think about other people.
This is how they will change the world

Year 5 and 6 Leadership Day
Our Year 5 and 6, students and teachers are looking forward to our upcoming Student Leadership Days, hosted by Luke McKenna’s Team.
Each year level cohort will have a full day of leadership development training using the
"Aspire Higher" model which uses a learning, action, reflection process throughout the day - allowing the students to reflect on themselves and their peers as leaders and team players.
Sessions will be tailored to work in with our regular bell times with the three sessions including:
- Leading with or without the badge- example, influence and kindness
- The Epic Race- active, fast-paced team event, with a focus on A.S.P.I.R.E.
- Knowing me, growing me- understanding my strengths and those of others
The Year 5 Leadership Day will be on Tuesday 22 March and the Year 6 Leadership Day will be on Thursday 24 March.
4R Assembly - Postponed
4R Assembly will need to be postponed this Friday due to Mrs McVean being away.
Parent Volunteer Inductions
With the lifting of some COVID-19 restrictions, we have been given the thumbs up to host face-to-face Volunteer Induction sessions with our double-vaxxed school community! In line with our Diocesan requirements, all those wishing to volunteer at St John's need to complete a brief 20-30 minute Volunteer Induction session each year prior to volunteering on site. We are hosting a number of sessions in the school library over the coming weeks to accommodate our highly valued returning volunteers and our volunteers-to-be. We look forward to seeing you there!
