From Our Principal...
Dear Parents / Caregivers,
If you have a child eligible for Prep in 2023 please complete an online enrolment as soon as possible as places are limited.

Pentecost Sunday

Fun Fact...Christians celebrate Pentecost 50 days after Easter. Did you know that the Greek word Pentecost means "50th day"?
Over the past 12 months, it has been a privilege to journey with children and adults as they take their Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation & First Holy Communion). Spending time with people who question, discuss and genuinely want to learn has assisted my understanding of what Catholics do and why. It has also been refreshing to hear how the church is responding to new ideas and lines of thought under the guidance of Pope Francis.
All of this takes courage.
Pentecost Sunday acknowledges the gift of the Holy Spirit to the disciples, on the Jewish feast of Pentecost, and the courage this provided them to spread Jesus’ message. As Catholic Christians, we celebrate in a special way the coming of the holy spirit to give us courage to bring the gifts and fruits of the spirit to life.
As people celebrate being a spirit-filled person, let us hope we are guided to bring Jesus’ message to the people we interact with every day. We invite everyone to show through our words, thoughts and actions:
A person of the spirit who is kind and thoughtful.
A person of the spirit who is compassionate and understanding.
A person of the spirit who considers the needs of others first.
A person of the spirit who is generous in thought, words and deeds.
A person of the spirit who lives out the message of Jesus’ gospel.
This Sunday, 5 June we invite families to join our Year 3 students celebrate Pentecost Sunday at Our Lady Star of the Sea church at 6pm.
Take care and God bless.

APC News...
Last week saw the start of National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and critically examine how we can contribute to the journey of reconciliation. On Thursday 26 May we observed National Sorry Day here at St John’s, a day to remember and acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generation’. It is a day for reflection and to give consideration to The Uluru Statement from the Heart as an invitation to all Australians from First Nations Australians to walk together to build a better future by establishing a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution. These are important and significant occasions and pivotal in our country’s history.

Bicycle and Scooter Survey
Dear Parents/carers and staff
In partnership with Arup and Zwart Transport Planning, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is gathering insights from parents/carers and staff about bicycle and scooter parking at schools across Queensland. The Queensland Department of Education and Catholic Education Diocese of Rockhampton has granted permission for schools to be involved in the research.
If you would like to contribute your experiences and assist in improving bicycle/scooter parking at schools, we invite you to complete the following online survey by Friday, 24 June 2022.

Athletics Carnival Updates
The wet weather forced us to change our 2022 Athletics Carnival this year; splitting the field events from the sprint events. Often, it is not until you are forced to try something new, do you see the pros and cons.
At this stage the feedback has been positive from staff on splitting the carnival and as we grow bigger, it may well have to head this way. We encourage feedback from families and will most certainly be asking the opinion of our students.
On Friday we saw the finals of the shot put, long jump and 1500m with a variety of records broken.
Congratulations to the following students who broke some long standing records:
2013 Long Jump Amelia Mullins 3.08m
2011 Long Jump Tofunmi Kaka 4.02m
2011 1500m Shana Paterson 6.01.12 minutes
2012 1500m Kaylee Simpson 6.25.91 minutes
