Feast Day - Star Of The Sea
St John’s Most Certainly Does Have Talent!!
On Friday we saw the most amazing talent showcased on our stage with our very own super stars!
The talent, confidence and showmanship was simply outstanding. We laughed, we cried (with laughter), we clapped, we cheered and we were silenced (in sheer awe).
The acts were varied but equally talented. We saw dogs not quite behaving themselves, saw friends chopped in half, witnessed strength and elegance, listened to heavenly voices and were treated to absolutely magical fingers on the piano.
While everyone on stage today (and during the heats and semi-finals) were winners, in every competition there are winners and placegetters.
The 2022, St John’s Got Talent, saw Maggie Connor and her magical dog Dixie, take out first place!
A very close 2nd place was awarded to two super star Prep students, Vin Bruton and Ryder Leeson, who had everyone in fits of laughter with their magic show. Please know that although Ryder was chopped in half, he is absolutely fine!
And 3rd place was awarded to the gracefully elegant, Lilah Hall who mesmerised the audience with her lyrical performance.
Each place-getter was awarded a $75, $50 or $25 voucher from the tuckshop.
Due to the exceptional depth of talent this year, the judging was so tight between all 11 finalists; any one of them could have won. With this in mind, one of our judges, Mrs McVean (Year 4R Teacher), threw in an extra prize of a $15 voucher to the tuckshop to each of our 4th – 11th placegetters - Elle-Jaye Attard, Klanci Daley, Jason Anderson, Gielle Panis, Aydn Gaeta, Zander Setiawan, Ivey Watt and Shana & Aria Paterson.
We so hope our grandparents enjoyed the Grand Final of our St John’s Got Talent, and look forward to seeing talent grace our stage again in 2024!

AFL Girls at Regional Championships
On Tuesday 9th August our AFL Girls Team competed at the North Queensland Regional Championships in the statewide Queensland AFL Cup. The competition was between the four winners of other regional areas from Capricornia, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. The girls played their preliminary final against Moranbah State School and won 48-0. They played the final against Ryan Catholic College from Townsville and were very narrowly beaten 27-32. It was a nail-biting game where the girls absorbed the heavy pressure in the first quarter and then staged a comeback to get within 4 points and were camped down the opposition end in the dying minutes but just couldn’t quite kick the winning goal.
Many staff and students in the school were able to watch the games as they were live streamed which was exciting to see their fellow students play and hear the commentary of the game. The girls played their hearts out and tried their hardest to win the final but unfortunately just fell short. I was incredibly proud of the fantastic way they represented St John’s and the sportsmanship they conveyed not only on the day but throughout all the games to get to this level of the competition. They have certainly excelled themselves and should be very proud of their efforts. Thanks to the parents who provided the opportunity for their daughters and made the long trip to Townsville. Special thanks to Fiona Grambauer who went above and beyond in organising a playing strip, water bottles and transported these items to Townsville. Thanks also to the Gladstone Suns for allowing us to use their jerseys for the game, it was greatly appreciated.
Finally, thank you to the 16 girls who played in the team, turned up for training and played with such passion to represent our school. I could not have been any prouder to be a teacher at St John’s as I was last week.

Book Week
Friday 19 August to Friday 26 August 2022

Library News...
Welcome to Science week in our school library.
The theme for National Science Week in 2022 is Glass: More than meets the eye. It is based on the UN International Year of Glass. It will celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future.
Apart from our other activities and games we will have stained glass making activities in the library this week.
Last weeks ‘What country am I’ was Togo!
Good luck with this weeks country.

RSPCA Cupcake Day
The annual Year 5 RSPCA Cupcake Day fundraiser is just a whisker away! On THIS Wednesday 17 August, students can pawchase a cupcake in suppawt of the local Gladstone Animal Rescue Group. Cupcakes are donated by the Year 5 students as part of the School Stewardship Program, which provides practical ways students can live their calling as Christians in everyday life. What a purrfectly delicious opportunity for students to Make Jesus Real by contributing to a worthy cause!
