I Do – I Do – I Do – I Do
From Our Principal ....
Dear Families
One of Great Britain’s most famous generals is often quoted as saying that the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton. I still see the value of sports carnivals and sporting events. The Roman ideal of ‘sound mind in a sound body’ is one that strongly influences my thinking.
I know I can get caught up in this notion, but it is one that resonates with me both as an educator and as a member of Catholic Education. Catholic Education speaks very clearly about educating the whole person and assisting students and families to grow as people on their lifelong journey.
To me, education is about learning and growing. It happens in the classroom. It happens in the playground. It happens in every social situation in our day. One of the strengths I speak of with families about Catholic Education is that I don’t believe we limit ourselves to providing just an academic education. There is more to growth than just academic improvement. Some of the improvements, we will never see. Sometimes just the fact that I competed and did my best helps me to grow as a person.
This week our school teams head to Challenge Cup. As you may be aware, Challenge Cup is a competition for all Catholic primary schools in the Rockhampton diocese. Students from across the diocese gather for three days to compete in Rugby League and Netball. This competition is traditionally held at St Brendan’s College in Yeppoon during the first week of Term Three. It is one of the largest primary school carnivals in the state and for some children, the highest level of competition that they will get to attend.
Teams have been training and I am conscious that coaches and students have given up a large amount of their own time to prepare. We will look forward to teams returning and giving us a briefing on the carnival.
Have a great week and hug your kids.
Regards
Jamie Emerick
St John's Student Council
As of Semester Two, we will be forming our Student Council here at St John’s.
A Student Council is a group of students who represent their classmates in discussing school issues, ideas and make decisions that affect the whole school.
Our Student Council will help to make decisions about school projects, organise some events, make decisions on what students need at St John’s and pose Student Voice questions to the school community.
Our Student Council will be run by students, with some assistance from Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Graham.
The Student Council will meet each fortnight (at a day and time yet to be decided) and light refreshments will be served at each meeting.
It is very important for St John’s students to have a Student Council. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) state that “Children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives”.
It is our goal at St John’s to provide meaningful ways for our students to voice their opinions and have their views considered on decisions that impact them at St John’s.
At the end of last term, each class in Years 3-6 held an in-class election to vote in one classmate to be their Class Representative on the Student Council.
Congratulations to the following students who were elected:
3S - Hannah Polkinghorne
3L - Lachlan Kerr
3K - Jaden Tomlins
4K - Aurora Scheskie
4R - Braxon Attard
4P - Rueben Prince
5R - Matilda Young
5E - Larnie Seckington
5K - Jaxon Boyle
6D - Lexi French
6G - Camille Krebs
6B - Matilda Katic

Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs
Here at St. John’s, we pride ourselves on being sustainable and recycling what we can to help God’s creation. Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs is an Australian company that is collecting and sorting bread tags nation-wide. They are creating new products with recycled bread tags that include wheelchairs and reusable food bowls. As of May 2023, they have recycled over 10,000kg of Aussie bread tags (that’s over 10 tonnes of plastic waste)!
How can you help? Please collect any plastic bread clips from home and bring them into your classroom to put into your class’ collection container. There is also a collection container at the front office. Once a fortnight, Year 4 will collect the containers and empty them into our main bin. Once this is full, we will take it to the collection depot in town, where they will be sent away for recycling.
Thank you for helping us to be kinder to our world and for looking after God’s creation.

Grandparents' Day
We celebrate Grandparent’s Day annually with a morning tea provided by the school. Grandparents are invited to come to school for our Friday assembly. This year it will be the Prep Owls on stage.
The morning will run as follows:
- Assembly at 8:39am
- Class visits 8:50am-9:20am.
- Students take their grandparents to visit their classrooms as well as to other classrooms to see loved ones. At 9.20am students will return their grandparents to Nazarene Place for morning tea. Morning tea is only for grandparents. Students will return to class.
- Morning tea provided (sandwiches, scones, tea and coffee) 9:25am-10:15am
